  • A Comprehensive Guide to SEBS Properties, Applications and Selection
    Oct 20, 2026
    1. What Is SEBS? Styrene-Ethylene-Butylene-Styrene (SEBS) is a block copolymer produced by reacting Styrene-Butadiene-Styrene (SBS) with hydrogen. Specifically, it is a linear or star-shaped triblock copolymer composed of styrene as the terminal blocks and a hydrogenated butadiene-derived ethylene-butylene copolymer as the central elastomeric block. As a powdered thermoplastic rubber, block copolymers serve as one of the primary raw materials for manufacturing thermoplastic elastomers.      2. Key Physical and Chemical Properties Superior Weatherability & Thermal Stability: Since SEBS contains no unsaturated double bonds, it exhibits outstanding resistance to UV rays, ozone, and high temperatures, with a long-term service temperature reaching up to 120°C. It maintains exceptional outdoor durability without yellowing or cracking. Eco-Friendly, Non-Toxic & High Compliance: Formulated without plasticizers or halogens, SEBS is safe and non-toxic, fully compliant with food-grade and medical device standards (such as FDA, REACH, and RoHS). It serves as an ideal green alternative to traditional PVC. Excellent Recyclability & Processability: As a thermoplastic elastomer, scrap and waste materials can be reprocessed and recycled via standard thermoplastic technologies like injection molding, extrusion, and blow molding, significantly reducing material waste and overall production costs. High Oil Absorption & Superior Compatibility: Displays high oil absorption capacity (absorbing multiple times its weight in paraffinic or naphthenic oils to formulate ultra-soft TPEs) and superior thermodynamic compatibility with polyolefin resins such as PP and PE.   3. Industrial Applications of SEBS Soft-Touch TPE Elastomers & Overmolding By blending SEBS with polypropylene (PP) and paraffinic/naphthenic white oils, TPE elastomers with Shore hardness ranging from A0 to 95 can be produced. Offering superior surface feel and weatherability, these materials are widely applied in soft-touch grips, stationery, toys, sports equipment, toothbrush handles, weatherstrips, and various overmolding parts. Plastics Toughening & High-Efficiency Compatibilizers SEBS serves as an effective toughening agent for engineering plastics—including PA6, PC, PPO, PET, PBT, and PP—via chemical modification or direct blending. It also acts as a vital compatibilizer for non-compatible polymer blends (e.g., PE and PS), markedly enhancing impact strength in plastic alloys and recycled compounds. Premium Adhesives & Sealants Utilizing its superior ageing and thermal resistance, SEBS formulated with C5 petroleum resins and tackifying oils yields premium hot-melt pressure-sensitive adhesives (HMPSA), structural adhesives, and sealants, meeting stringent eco-friendly standards for low VOC, high weatherability, and durable bonding. Cable Sheathing & Lubricant Viscosity Modifiers Blended with PP, white oil, and flame retardants, SEBS is used to produce durable wire and cable sheaths with outstanding insulation and flame retardancy. Additionally, due to its exceptional temperature stability and shear resistance, SEBS functions directly as a viscosity index improver (VII) for high-grade lubricating oils.   4. Partial SEBS Selection Guide Depending on the application scenarios, the following YH series grades are recommended for targeted selection: Twin-Screw Compounding & PP/PE Toughening/Overmolding: Sinopec SEBS YH-503T If your production line relies primarily on twin-screw dynamic mixing and requires both PP/PE matrix toughening and soft-touch skin layer overmolding, YH-503T is the preferred choice. With a moderately increased styrene end-block ratio, it offers superior interfacial anchoring and melt extensional viscosity, effectively minimizing phase separation risks. Automotive Interior Online Hot-Press Laminating: Sinopec SEBS YH-561T YH-561T focuses on enhancing high-temperature shear stability, making it ideal for online hot-press laminating of automotive interior components—where the material must withstand short-term contact with heating rollers above 180°C without significant yellowing or additive migration. Medical-Grade Transparent Tubing: Sinopec SEBS YH-501T For medical-grade transparent tubing applications, YH-501T has become a high-frequency choice in newly registered formulations (2026), thanks to its superior light transmittance retention following UV ageing.   Website: www.elephchem.com whatsapp: (+)86 13851435272 E-mail: admin@elephchem.com
